Now that we've voted on the first question, let's learn how to update your poll to the next Active Question (and every question after that).

By default, Crowdpurr assumes that you want to control how often the questions advance, what Views are shown to your crowd, and when to show them. This is called Host Controlled Mode, which gives you full control of how your poll runs. There are other Experience Playback Modes, such as Fully Automatic and Crowd Controlled, which serve different purposes.

This tutorial assumes you are using the Host Controlled Mode, which provides the most flexibility.

Updating the Active Question

What is the Active Question? The Active Question is the current question that is being shown to your crowd on all Participant Views, the Presentation View, and on the Experience Dashboard. This refers to the question that your crowd currently sees and is actively voting on.

Whenever you update the Active Question, the entire poll will instantly update across your crowd's Participant Views and the Presentation View in real-time... Pretty cool, right? Your poll always syncs to the Active Question.

Before starting your poll, make sure your poll's Active Question is set to Question 1.

There are several ways to update the Active Question.

From the Experience Dashboard

Use the Active Question Controller

To update the Active Question, click on the left or right arrows under the Active Question section located on the lower right of the Experience Dashboard.

You can also click and type in the question number where the Active Question number is displayed. This is a good way to jump to a certain question instead of clicking through sequentially.

Sync to Tabs

By default, newly created polls have the Sync to Tabs setting enabled. Enabling this setting keeps the Active Question in sync with the Questions tab. For instance, clicking on a question tab under the blue Questions section will also update the Active Question.

When Sync to Tabs is disabled, the Active Question only changes when you use the arrow buttons, keyboard shortcuts, or direct input on the Active Question switcher. This is super-handy for many reasons including:

  • Reading ahead to the next question before activating it

  • Making on-the-fly changes to future questions in the poll

  • Marking corrections to past questions that have already run in the poll

For example, if you're in the middle of an experience, you can disable Sync to Tabs, make any needed changes, and then re-enable it.

Remember to return to the Active Question's tab! After re-enabling Sync to Tabs after disabling it to visit other question tabs, be sure to return to the same question tab as the Active Question. Otherwise, the Active Question will update to the currently viewed question tab, triggering that as the Active Question.

Click on the Presentation View's Arrows

On the Presentation View, you can click on the left and right arrows on each side of the window to set the Active Question to the previous or next question.

Use the Arrow Keys On Your Keyboard

The left and right arrow keys on your computer's keyboard will also update the Active Question. This is a quick and easy shortcut to update the Active Question without having to use the mouse or click any buttons.

What if I mess up the question order or start with the wrong question? No worries! You can update the Active Question at any time, and everyone's devices will update instantly. If you start your poll on the wrong question, just update the Active Question to the first question.

Additionally, if you accidentally skip a question or advance too far, just go back to the question you skipped after you finish the current question. Crowdpurr will not let your audience vote on a poll question more than once (unless you have Unlimited Voting enabled on the Poll Settings, so you don't have to worry about your crowd voting more than once or ensuring an exact question order.

Use keyboard shortcuts! There are lots of keyboard shortcuts peppered into the Crowdpurr platform to help you run your experiences more easily. Check out this article for a quick reference to all the keyboard shortcuts available on Crowdpurr.

Update our Poll to the Second Question

If you haven't already, go ahead and update the Active Question to the second question of our test poll. This will instantly and automatically update the Presentation View and all crowd Participant Views to the next question. Be sure to disable Show Live Answer Results (A) if you don't want your crowd to see the live poll results immediately after they've voted, and you want to wait to display them later when you enable Show Live Answer Results (A).

Can I go backward in a poll? What happens if I revisit a question? You may go backward, forward, or jump to any question as many times as you'd like in a poll. The question will always allow anyone who hasn't voted on the question to vote. New participants who joined but haven't voted on a question will be able to vote on a previous question if it is revisited.

Repeating the Previous Steps To Complete Our Poll

Using what we've learned in the last few steps of this tutorial, you can see that running your poll is as simple as the following:

  1. Update the Active Question. You can update the Active Question by using any of the previously mentioned methods.

  2. Question Timer. If enabled, allow time for your crowd to vote on the question. You can keep an eye on the Quick Stats and Total Questions Votes on the Experience Dashboard to get an idea of how many of your crowd have voted on the current question. When the timer expires, your crowd can no longer answer the question, and you can proceed to the next step.

  3. Show Question Notes (N). If you've added any Question Notes to your Experience, you can optionally choose to display the notes for your crowd to review.

  4. Show Live Answer Results (A). This will display on the Presentation View and Participant Views.

  5. Advance to the Next Question. You're now ready to proceed to the next question. Update the Active Question to the next question.

  6. Repeat steps 2 - 5 until the end of your last question.

  7. Review the final answer results with your crowd.

  8. Finalize your poll.

You will repeat this process until you're on the final question of your poll.
